Overview

Enterococcus faecium is a Gram-positive facultatively anaerobic bacteria which is part of the normal flora of humans and other animals [Wiki].

While E. faecium is typically a commensal inhabitant of the human gut, it is occasionally associated with nosocomial infections, including meningitis, endocarditis, bacteremia, and urinary tract colonization [Wiki].

Pathogenic factors of E. faecium include its ability to form biofilms, and the ability to harbor and tranfer antibiotic-resistant plasmids [Wiki].

E. faecium also has beneficial properties that have lead to a number of strains being used in probiotics for people and domestic animals. For example, E. faecium produces enterocins A, B, and P, that inhibit pathogenic gut microbes, such as Escherichia coli [Wiki].

[Krawczyk2021  🕮 ] has reviewed E. faecium.

Omni-Biotic AB10 - Microbiome Restoration Probiotic is a probiotic containing Enterococcus faecium W54, among other bacteria. [Schwetz2020  🕮 ] reports that a similar formulation made by the same company showed a reduction in multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria and increased levels of the genus Enterococcus in fecal analysis. Dr. Weyrich has no clinical experience with this product.
